Sarcoma

Cancer is something that affects your whole self; body, mind and spirit. When you look for expertise, consider the team at HonorHealth where our doctors have expertise in sarcoma and pathological fractures and where the entire team is focused on your needs.

Sarcoma Center of Excellence

Sarcoma is cancer of the bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, blood vessels or other connective or supportive tissue in the body.

The Sarcoma Center of Excellence is one of the few that specializes in treating sarcoma in the nation. With a collaboration of bone and soft tissue cancer specialists and researchers, the Sarcoma Center of Excellence uses a multidisciplinary team approach for care and treatment. The team includes adult medical oncology, surgery, pathology, diagnostic radiology, orthopedic oncology, radiotherapy and reconstructive surgery.

Your personalized treatment will encompass:

  • The diagnostic radiologist and pathologist. They're involved with defining the tumor location, diagnosis and staging of the disease.
  • The surgical, medical and radiation oncologist. They work together to design a treatment plan that's critical to successful management of your disease.
  • The Sarcoma Center of Excellence also draws on the skills of our supporting staff including genetic counseling, social work, rehabilitation, nutrition and pain management, if necessary.

Pathologic fracture program

Cancerous tumors in the bone can cause that bone to erode and become weakened, making it vulnerable to pathological fractures. Pathological fractures require treatment that can be quite different from that of a normal fracture, and the typical healing process can vary due to other cancer treatments, such as radiation and chemotherapy.

Because medical and surgical treatment of pathological fractures is challenging, it's important to find a team experienced in this specialized area. You'll find it at the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center and its pathologic fracture program.
