Five allergy triggers that could land you in urgent care

One moment, you’re fine. The next, your throat feels tight, your skin flares with hives or your breathing feels off. “Whether it’s something you ate, something that stung or something in the air, allergies can turn your day upside down fast,” says Phillip Pileggi, MD, HonorHealth Urgent Care.

Here are five triggers that could land you in urgent care faster than you can say “achoo.” Seek medical help if your symptoms worsen.

1. Desert pollen you can’t see

Pollen from Palo Verde, olive and mesquite trees, ragweed and desert broom often go unnoticed by those unfamiliar with the landscape. Common symptoms include sneezing, severe sinus pressure, itchy eyes and asthma flareups.

2. Monsoons and mold

Monsoons stir up mold spores from dampened desert plants and soil, creating a double whammy for allergy sufferers. Airborne spores can cause sneezing, congestion, hives and itchy eyes. The combination of dry desert air and seasonal rains can irritate your respiratory system, making your seasonal allergies particularly unpredictable.

3. Scorpion stings

Scorpion stings are a common surprise in the Southwest! You might feel a tingling, burning, or numbness around the sting site — don’t worry, it usually fades within 24 hours. Just watch out, as some folks may experience extra sensitivities or allergies.

4. Unwanted rashes

Arizona’s landscape is gorgeous — but some of its plants don’t play nice. Creosote, mesquite and ocotillo sap can leave you red, itchy and regretting that scenic hike. Plus, sunscreen and skincare products with harsh chemicals can cause irritation, especially under the desert sun.

5. Sonoran-style cuisine

Like many regional cuisines, Sonoran-style dishes may contain common allergens like nuts (pine or tree nuts in salsas), shellfish (shrimp or fish tacos), dairy (cheeses like cotija and queso fresco), gluten (flour tortillas) and eggs (in moles or desserts). As with any cuisine, always ask about ingredients before ordering.
