What is an endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty?

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is a minimally invasive weight loss procedure. It requires no skin incisions and reduces the size of the stomach by 70-80%, lowering calorie intake and helping patients lose weight.

This procedure may be an option if you are significantly overweight with a body mass index (BMI) between 30 and 50 and diet and exercise have not worked for you. Calculate your BMI.

Within one year of the procedure, you can expect to lose 12-20% of your total body weight and see a 62-64% reduction of excess fat.

What happens during an endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty?

The endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is an outpatient procedure that lasts about 90 minutes.

While you’re under general anesthesia, a specially trained doctor passes an endoscope – a flexible tube that has a small camera on the end of it – through your mouth and down into your stomach. The doctor will sew your stomach into a smaller shape – similar to a tube or sleeve – without making incisions on your skin.

Many patients go home the same day after the procedure.

Who is a candidate for an endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty?

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty may be an option for adults who:

  • Are significantly overweight with a body mass index of 30 up to 50. Calculate your BMI.
  • Have not been successful in losing weight through diet and exercise.
  • Are looking for an alternative or don’t quality for bariatric surgery.

How do I prepare for my procedure?

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is not for everyone who is overweight. Before scheduling the procedure, your doctor will perform an evaluation and thoroughly review your medical history. The care team will discuss your weight loss goals, insurance and payment options.

If endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is the right option for you, your next step will be to enroll in a medically supervised weight loss program at the HonorHealth Bariatric Center as part of our collaborative approach to care.

Before your scheduled procedure, you will meet with the Endobariatric team to discuss pre- and post-operative care.

Are there risks involved?

With endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, there is a low risk of serious complications. You may experience minor side effects after your surgery, such as nausea or discomfort, lasting only a few days. Your doctor and care team can prescribe medications to adequately treat your symptoms while you recover.
